Pink Sands Beach: Harbor Island, Bahamas

Yes, it exists! And no, the name doesn’t lie. It really is Pink Sands Beach! 🏝️ 

Pink Sands Beach is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever set foot. Set in the quiet seaside of Harbor Island, off the coast of Eleuthera’s big island, these sands are so calming, and so worth your camera roll storage! 

Depending on your location up or down the coast, as well as the time of which you visit, the beach can be filled with private resort goers or left to your peaceful lonesome. Either way, you are sure to be in awe of the vibrant colors that flood your view. 

Turquoise shallows lead to sapphire blue depths. White tips spray as the waves crash on mineral-soaked sand. However, it is not mainly the natural minerals that provide the pinkish hue that draws people to this beach. It is, in fact, biological organisms! 🌊

Hold on, don’t get grossed out or worried yet. There’s an explanation. 

The pink comes from microscopic, single-celled organisms called foraminifera, which grow shells of calcium carbonate. These shells are bright red and pink in color! So, when the organisms die, their shells get washed up and combined with ocean floor materials, such as coral fragments and other crushed shells. Add the mixture of white sand, and you’ve got a pink beach! 🐚🩷

Yet another neat fact—as well as another reason to go see it for yourself—is that the sand’s composition makes it famously soft and cool to the touch, even on a hot day! For the Bahamas, this is a win, as the summers rise to crazy temperatures. I can attest to this, as I was present mid-June, and, as water-loving as I am, cared for nothing if not air conditioning. ☀️

Being at Pink Sands is undeniably relaxing, the moisture in the air and in the sand leaving your skin smooth and soft too! 

It’s indescribable. 

One really does have to feel for themselves the environment as a whole, because you simply can’t grasp it, no matter how much I try to use words to describe it. 

For these reasons and more, truly I say to you (even if you don’t fancy yourself a beachgoer!) this one is a must-see destination. I hope it brings a little pink to your day!
