Rapunzel Retold: Cress by Marissa Meyer
Cress by Marissa Meyer
Oh my word!! Oh my...wowww. I'm calling it now: I will be loosing adjectives while trying to explain how beyond impressed I am with this third installation of The Lunar Chronicles. π€
I knew when the first book in the series, Cinder (see my review here), ended, this plot would not be resolved in just one, two, even three books. The efficiency of Marissa Meyer has my full admiration! We see a tight, engaging plot, without filler, that takes us from one book to another, and is very likely to bring us to full "Happily Ever After" in the ending of the fourth and final book!
I know that I, for one, am SO excited. π
Okay, okay, sorry! Back to THIS novel... Cress follows the guidelines of the original Rapunzel story. Trapped in her "tower" (a satellite), Cress hasn't had human—or Lunar—interaction her whole life, outside of her evil mistress, head thaumaturge of Queen Levana. The storyline for this book is pure gold. As young and inexperienced as Cress is, she makes a seriously hilarious main character. πΈ
‼️Side note: I love how you get the POVs of all the main characters, and with each book there's a new FMC and MMC!
However, I've heard people say how they didn't appreciate how "ignorant" Cress was, but I think it was part of her charm. Diversity in character is so fascinating and leads to a more unpredictable, comprehensive read. She's 16, an orphan, stranded, and her best friend is a computer. I would be a little star-struck in the world too. Grace, people. Enjoy the arcs and developments!
π I obviously can't say nearly as much as I want too. That is typically the case, especially with SPOILER-FREE reviews... so you really ought to pick up the series if you're in the mood for a thrilling, high-action, high-stakes, all-encompassing read with intense slow-burn romance!! Oh, with a splash of fairytale in a pool of futuristic sci-fi world-reimagining! I will say this, though...
π The romances? YES, YES, YES! So wholesome, so deserving of praise, and SO swoony. It's pretty addictive! The tension, the adventure, and the slow-burn results in unspeakably squeal-worthy. I mean, they are fairytales. Ugh, I'm dying. First, I need the next book ASAP. Second, I can't go into detail because it'll spoiler too much good stuff and I wouldn't do that to a fellow reader! So, find out for yourself, hehe!
✍ The writing? Well, since it is Marissa Meyer, since I'm still reading the series, and since IT'S SO STINKIN GOOD... I'd say yeah, this is some impeccable writing. I believe I've mentioned before how I don't absolutely love all the violence, and that remains true. However, I was extremely happy to finish Cress without the violence going over the top, like roughly the last half of Scarlet (see my review here), in my opinion. Only was I cringing in discomfort for one chapter: Chapter 42 (see content warnings below).
π©π»Ahh and don't even get me started on the plot. I struggle to find flaws here, which is rare in the writing world. I hope ya'll understand that it is WAYYY too huge to detail here, but I will just say, the length the author and the characters go to, the world exploration, the cultural differences, the heartwarming relationships and strong friendships make it all the worth reading. The good vs. evil is so incredibly complex. The battles are massive, physically and otherwise. I am just in awe! So, so good!
Alright, alright, the moment you've all been waiting for...
π CHARACTERSπ — there are so many amazing ones... I shall do my best!
Cress — Girl, I love you, and I am SO SORRY for what you've been put through. Like, this is insane. I love her love for others. Her thoughts are rarely focused solely on herself and her own well being. At least, being in the situation she is. However, you might come to think she has a bit of a ridiculously hopeless romantic personality... you know, just maybe. (Sarcasm. She's literally known for it). But I adore her all for more for it! And it might not be so ridiculous after all...ππ°️π
Thorne — Let's gooooo he made it to MMC position!! So happy for him. Alright, so, BEST Flynn Rider everrrr. Like, better. I am pretty obsessed with him (like most fangirlies...). I don't like him all the time, I prefer the tiny moments where he realizes he needs to be real, serious, and attentive. Because those three words are not what many people would describe him by. At all. He needed to grow up too, and I think this book shows that. His development is slow, but so amazing!! And of course, hilarious. ππΈπ
Cinder — Yes! Yessss!!! Man, she is one of my top faves. She is just this brilliant, imperfect, unfathomably COOL girl!! She is Cress's age, and yet couldn't be more different (which is awesome, by the way!). I can't get enough of her. And even though she never asked to be the leader, her leadership skills are beautifully flawed! Miss Tough Gal, and yet, her heart, although synthetic, is so soft. Oh, and her with Kai... HOTπ₯ππ¦Ώ
Scarlet — Missed her most of this book!! Cannot wait to see her rise up again as she's done before! Her personality is fiery and fierce, and I am here for it. So neat, girl. And her with Wolf?? I'm sobbing!ππ
Wolf — He's such a man!! If you look past his confusing, almost wolf-like composure, he's beautiful. His story with Scarlet is just so SWEET. I love it, and I crave more, please! πΊπͺ
❌I would comment on Mistress Sybil and Queen Levana if I wasn't completely and utterly disgusted with them. Yeah, bye. Gross. Get out. WHEN ARE WE GONNA WIN AND DEFEAT HERRRR... *ahem*πͺ
π‘π°️ππ»ππππ―π¨πͺπππ²πΈ
πΆ️Spice/sexual/innuendo — No gross, uncomfortable, or inappropriate mentions. No crude talk. Lots of yearning, imagining (daydreams of cuddling, kissing), all clean and not described. Touching includes hand-holding, dancing, kisses on lips and forehead. Mostly infatuation. Kisses are semi-described, not gross, and clean.
Until next time!! Happy Reading!! π☕️✝️π
