Snow White In A New Light: Winter by Marissa Meyer

Winter by Marissa Meyer

I MADE IT! HA HA!

*happy dance* 💃

The finale. The final fairytale. The happily ever afters!!! I’m squealing. 😆

This may seem silly to non-book-lovers, but to readers I say, there are way too many emotions swirling around this book right now. The sadness of the series ending, the adventure complete. The pure giddiness of multiple well-deserved happy endings (for the good guys, at least😏). Annnnnd the regret that I didn’t write this review much sooner to the day I finished the book…I knew I’d forget crucial writing material. Oh well, we shall make do—stick with me!

Onto the actual review 🤭

✍️Jumping into the Winter after thoroughly loving Cress (see my review here) was beyond exciting. The anticipation that the final novel of The Lunar Chronicles would include a climax big enough to serve the series’ buildup was seriously amazing. Marissa Meyer—as if she didn’t have me hooked already—doesn’t leave the words “happy ending” as the only reason to devour Winter. Coupled with new strength and strategy, serious feet-kicking romances, and the idea of an intergalactic war on the horizon, this Snow White story had me flipping pages at light-speed!⚡️😉

👩‍💻Meyer has definitely earned my respect through her writing, and I can honestly say I have learned an abundant amount from just reading her style, which inspires me to continue to write—both my blog and my own novels. I feel as though I should say “Bravo, Ms. Meyer! Bravo!” 🤩

*ahem* …

📚The plot. The PLOT. AHHHHH. So, I hope you all understand the difficulty of non-spoiler reviews, because…oh my word, do I so desperately want to shout aloud all of the SPECTACULAR twists and turns of this novel’s own individual story, as well as the beautiful continuation of all four books. I am irrevocably impressed, once again, with the flow this series so harmoniously presents; fairytale on top of fairytale, wrapped up in a futuristic sci-fi world!

🌎🌕Not a second of hesitation, no boring or slow pauses in the storyline, simply edge-of-your-seat action and “YES, finally!” moments. With each book comes new characters, combined with our lovable cast as they join together to pull off an impossible mission of saving both the moon and the earth. Each dead-end not always as it seems, each defeat forgotten by undeniable success, and each character a genuine flawed hero in and of themselves. 😌

Well, unless they’re evil. Not so heroic then.

💞Yes, yes. The real reason my hopeless romantics are here. Let me just say, everyone, two words…stinkin’ adorable. Every. Single. One of ‘em. My favorite part? NO GAYness! Yippee!! Especially since Meyer implements LGBTQ into her other series. But also? The individuality of each couple. They are so diverse, so unique, so lovable in such separate ways. And that is why I’ve decided to do Character Wrap-Ups a bit differently for this review. Just for fun.

Enjoy! 😊

🗣️CHARACTERS🗣️  — with a little twist… (a little grace for the emojis…they’re not exact)

👩🏽Cinder and Kai🧑🏻 — I’m just gonna say it. I knew they’d be my favorite couple right off the their introductions (although, I can’t really pick a favorite 😍). Like, oh my GOSH. I can’t even tell you why. Maybe it’s the Cinderella retelling (one of my favorite fairytales), maybe it’s how adorably different he is with her than with everyone else. I don’t know. Anyhoo, their story together, formed through crazy hard times and experiences, across four separate books (4.5, if you count Stars Above), literally has you gasping for air. What I mean by that…in a world on the brink of war, romance isn’t easy, especially with the difference in social status between these two. So talk about slow-burn, because they were the happy ending you had to be patient for. Readers, It. Is. Worth. Every. Page!!!! Ps. I highly recommend reading Stars Above, the series’ novella!🌹🦾

👩🏼‍🦰Scarlet and Ze’ev🧑🏽 — Yeah, I know, he goes by Wolf. Which I don’t mind, despite my confusion when it comes to what the heck he looks like after being described as heavily mutated… not the point, though. I stinkin’ love these guys too. They are purely amazing. Their bond is so incredibly strong, their love as deep as their bones. As odd and scary and…unnatural as the whole situation they’re in with Luna, I adored reading about them throughout the series—and into Stars Above! They’re warriors, as well as passionate and kind. The way Meyer portrays them individually, as well as together, is as if they belonged with each other from the beginning. Even with the whole Red Riding Hood retelling, I think I loved them both even more in Winter!! 🍅🐺

👩🏼Crescent and Carswell🧑🏽 — Cress and Thorne. Thorne, a fan obsession, I know. My personal—and most likely unpopular—opinion of him wasn’t always impressive. I didn’t appreciate his arrogant manner, because it was so clear how much rudeness came with it. However, upon meeting Cress in the third novel, I was admittedly excited to see how his character would develop. By the end of Cress, he was ok. After Winter, I’m a fan. He was always hilarious. Plus, Cress is so fun and new. These two are the human embodiment of joy and mischievousness. A pair of dramatic flairs, dangerous missions, and Rapunzel vibes. I enjoyed them in Cress, and I love them in Winter. Full-on swoon-worthy fairytale adventure! 🚀🌎

👩🏾‍🦱Winter and Jacin🧑🏼 — Last but not least! A favorite couple of many. The stolid body guard angle captures many. I did enjoy their story, their background and hardships together. The sacrifices and near-death instances certainly made it a daring romance. I was not sure how I’d like Winter as a character, since she’s described as dainty and meek as well as brave and strong. She’s unashamed of her silly ramblings, solid in her anti-mind-controlling beliefs, and quietly powerful. I loved her heart of gold, and approve Jacin as an ample and loving friend/lover/guard. Her stubbornness is not deterred by anyone’s actions, and her role to play as Snow White was wonderful. As far as slow-burn goes, their story is one I read impatiently, eager for a happy ending to a pair who have dealt with a life of betrayal. Totally worth it and beautiful!👑 ⚔️

‼️Whoever else wasn’t mentioned here was either because I hate them (*cough* Levana, Aimery Park…pretty much all of Luna) or they were amazing (Maha, among others!)‼️

💭QUOTES💭 — can’t share too many, I’d read the book if I were you…

〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️

“My point is that I am going to figure this out, like I always do. First, we’re going to find a way to get into Artemisia. We’re going to find Cress and rescue Cinder and Wolf. We’re going to overthrow Levana, and by the stars above, we are going to make Cinder a queen so she can pay us a lot of money from her royal coffers and we can all retire very rich and very alive, got it?”

Winter started to clap. “Brilliant speech. Such gumption and bravado.”

“And yet strangely lacking in any sort of actual strategy,” said Scarlet.

“Oh, good, I'm glad you noticed that too,” said Iko. “I was worried my processor might be glitching.”

〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️

“I fear tomorrow will be even more difficult for you, Sir Clay. Do try to think of me when you can.”
“Try, Princess?” He smirked, meeting her gaze again. “I can’t seem to think of much else.”

〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️

“It’s just like the one Scarlet had.” He flipped the gun in his palms, running his thumbs along the barrel. “She shot me in the arm once.”
This confession was said with as much tenderness as if Scarlet had given him a bouquet of wildflowers rather than a bullet wound.”

〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️

“I don't hear anything."
"Exactly. That's what happens when you stop talking.”

〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️

“One should never save cake for later when it can be eaten now.”

〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️

“She was prettier than a bouquet of roses and crazier than a headless chicken. Fitting in was not an option.”

〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️

“And they all lived happily to the end of their days.”

〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️ 〰️

“Thorne guffawed and pushed a hand into his hair. “Are we running a boardinghouse for misplaced royalty around here, or what?”
